Route of Commemorative Plaques

9. Leusderweg 181

This was the home of MAX HELLMANN
murdered in Sobibor on 09-04-1943

Max Hellmann was born in Gunzenhausen on 24 December 1886. He was married to Recha Frank and was a professional bicycle salesman. We know very little about this couple. In 1933, Max came to the Netherlands with his wife. They moved around various addresses in Rotterdam and came to Amersfoort in October 1940 where they lived with the Gorter family at Edisonstraat 65. From December 1940, the couple lived with the Van der Spaa famlily on Leusderweg. Two years later, the occupier forced them to move to Amsterdam and their last address in the city was Trompenburgerstraat 125-III hoog. Max was taken to Camp Vught on 26 February 1943 and then, on 31 March 1943, to Camp Westerbork. On 6 April 1943, together with his wife, he was deported on transport number 57 to Sobibor and, on 9 April 1943, was murdered.
