The Colonial Walk
6. Bollenburgh
At Muurhuizen 19, you will find the Bollenhurgh house. This house is known as the parental home of statesman Johan van Oldenbarnevelt (1547-1619). The site dates from around 1400 and is one of the oldest and most beautiful houses built into a city wall in Amersfoort. The house is very definitely from the Middle Ages. The roof construction, joisting with corbel pieces, candle-niches, wall paintings of saints, and cellar vaulting have thus all been preserved. The mural of the Last Judgement is exceptional. Bollenburgh also functioned as a hostel for a while and the house’s name dates from that time. From our more recent history, the house still includes a hiding space used during the Second World War.
