10. The Unicorn
The water spout depicts a maid with a unicorn. This image is a reference to the earlier brewery called ‘De Eenhoorn’ (the unicorn) which formed a dual-brewery with the ‘De Kroon’ brewery which is a little further along on the left.
Amersfoort had a substantial beer industry. The breweries were primarily located on the Kortegracht and Langegracht because they could use the canal water for the process. It was only in the 18th century that pure Amersfoort spa water began to be used. The beer industry created employment opportunities as an alternative to the cooperages and agriculture, and provided income from taxation.
